Massachusetts is home to some truly innovative dual language programs that demonstrate what’s possible when schools embrace multilingualism as an asset. Boston Public Schools offers dual language programs in Spanish/English in selected elementary schools and in one high school, as well as Haitian Creole/English programming at the Mattahunt Elementary School.

Particularly noteworthy is the Toussaint L’Ouverture Academy at the Mattahunt Elementary School, launched in September 2017 as the first Two-Way Immersion Haitian Creole Dual-Language Preschool Program in the country. This groundbreaking program serves students in grades K-6 and demonstrates Massachusetts’ commitment to serving diverse linguistic communities.

The MEL Community Foundation is currently partnering with The Greater Boston YMCA and the Boston Public Schools’ Community Hub Schools initiative and the Mattahunt Elementary School’s ESOL Program for Families supporting the school community’s bilingualism and families of their English learner students.
